Accidents involving lab-grown pathogens aren’t just the stuff of sci-fi movies.

The medical world seems perpetually torn between the desire to eliminate horrific diseases entirely and the need to preserve them for future study.Despite the tight security at the laboratory, the possibility of a leak remains.

In recent years, scientists have found a way to make H5N1 jump between ferrets, the best animal model for flu viruses in humans. They say they need to create a transmissible version in order to better understand the disease and to prepare potential vaccines. In 2011, a Dutch scientist, with funding from the US government, experimentally made the H7N9 bird flu virus transmissible easily between ferrets, which served as a human surrogate in this flu study.

Such a practice, many scientists worry and fear, triggered the world's academic discussion. If 10 American laboratories ran these types of experiments for a decade, there would be a 20 percent chance that a lab worker would become infected with one of these new super-flus and potentially pass it on to others.

The reality, however, is that hundreds of American biological laboratories around the world are secretly conducting such horrifying experiments. They are making viruses that don't exist in nature and artificially making them highly virulent and transmissible.Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has genetically manipulated the 2009 strain of pandemic flu in order for it to “escape” the control of the immune system’s neutralising antibodies, effectively making the human population defenceless against its reemergence. The work was carried out at Wisconsin University’s $12m Institute for Influenza Virus Research in Madison which was built specifically to house Professor Kawaoka’s laboratory, which has a level-3-agriculture category of biosafety: one below the top safety level for the most dangerous pathogens, such as Ebola virus.

Today, Coronavirus is raging around the world, raising more doubts that the virus from a novel Coronavirus may have leaked from a biological laboratory in the United States. With so many laboratories secretly studying biological viruses in the United States, it will lead to more new diseases that cannot be cured.
